American photographer Tanya Marcuse, most known for her large-scale photographs exploring the imperiled natural world, will share images and commentary from her most recent works Book of Miracles, Woven, and Fallen. Her projects use fantastical imagery and elaborate methods of construction to explore cycles of growth and decay and the dynamic tension between the passage of time and the photographic medium. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman Museum, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C.
MoCA CT presents a panel discussion between exhibiting artist, Tod Papageorge and a select few alumni such as John Pilson from the Yale School of Art to discuss the history, present and future of education on photography. This conversation will be moderated by the exhibition organizer, photographer and educator, Lisa Kereszi.
Woven Nº 16 is an exhibition of a single large work in conversation with A Feast of Fruit and Flowers: Women Still Life Painters of the Seventeenth Century and Beyond, as well as Nina Katchadourian, Fake Plants and Other Curiosities, and Sharon Core: 1606 to the Sixties.

Join the Loeb as we celebrate the opening of Great Green Hope for the Urban Blues, an exhibition which explores the connections between art and mythology of the Hudson Valley two hundred years after the origins of the so-called “Hudson River School” movement.
Artists Tanya Marcuse, Qiana Mestrich, and Lisa Sanditz all live in the Hudson Valley and have explored complex aspects of its beauty in their varied artistic practices. Together they will discuss how their own practices overlap and vary, informed by their personal experiences and choice of media.
A reception in the Loeb’s atrium follows the program, and the galleries will remain open until 5pm.
This installation bridges the fields of art and science by highlighting photography’s deep-rooted relationship with the natural world. Given the medium’s unmatched ability to render fine details, flowers and plant life have been a perennial fascination for photographers.
Tanya Marcuse and Mitch Epstein use plant imagery to comment on life’s passage from peak bloom to inevitable decay. Today, the natural world continues to provide fertile inspiration to a newer generation of artists, including Martine Gutierrez and Atong Atem, who weave botanicals into expressions of personal identity.
Marcuse discusses her work from two recent projects, "Woven" and "Book of Miracles" with a special focus on the elaborate process to create her photographs. Learn about Marcuse's artistic influences and trace the arc of her practice. Marcuse's work can be seen in the current exhibition "Laws of Nature" on view through March 31, 2024 in Kemper Gallery at the York Street Freyer-Newman Center.

Radius Books invites you to join photographer, Tanya Marcuse, and writer, Francine Prose, in conversation with David Chickey.
This three-volume triptych traces the arc of Tanya Marcuse's work from the iconic trees of Fruitless to the lush, allegorical compositions of Fallen and Woven. In Fruitless, Marcuse repeatedly photographs particular trees from the same vantage point, cataloguing their seasonal transformations. For Fallen, Marcuse uses frozen, decayed fruit from the same trees to depict an ordered paradise becoming wild and untended, a mixture of rot and growth where malevolent as well as beautiful creatures abound. Woven expands Fallen’s dense arrangements to immersive, 5 x 10-foot tableaux that interweave wildness and order, beauty and terror.
Marcuse and Prose will answer questions from the audience at the end of the talk. This event is free, but registration is required.
Join Tanya Marcuse and her longtime friend - the artist Portia Munson - as they discuss Woven at Julie Saul Gallery.
