The Church in Staatsburg presents 'Artist Books of Loss and Healing’. The exhibition brings together artist books centered on love, loss, grief, healing, and the many ways these experiences ask us to process. They represent the full range of what that territory contains - not only sorrow, but tenderness; not only grief, but the love that makes grief possible. A book might be an elegy, a love letter, or a record of moving through illness. It might be an homage to someone whose life and legacy deserve a better understanding. It might document recovery, or the slow, uneven work of learning to carry what cannot be put down. The work engages this terrain with care, intention, and the particular intimacy that the artist’s book form makes possible.
The works here were made across a range of traditions — letterpress and bookbinding, drawing and collage, photography and text, digital and hand-sewn construction. Editioned books, unique objects, and works available as reading copies are included.
Join us for transformative free events that connect art to action: a poetry reading, an art-book workshop, and sound works.
The exhibition features work by Enrique Borges, Ann Burke Daly, Linda Duvall, Alex Callendar, Giovanni Cocco, Alison Cornyn, Maureen Cummins, Yolanda Cuomo, Linda Duvall, Christy Ferrato, Donna Ferrato, Patty Goodwin, Heather Greer, Raj Hariharan, Sandra Harper, Ann Lovett, Tanya Marcuse, Jillian McDonald, Maria Mayer Feng, Michelle A M Miller, Stella Nall, Marianne Petit, Sylvia Plachy, Norma Quintana, Nina Sobell, Sandra Spilke, Beth Thielen, Cristina Vatielli, Diana Weymar, Susan Wides, and Marina Zurkow.
