Tanya Marcuse will give a talk on Book of Miracles on view at the Hyde Collection
Feibes & Schmitt Gallery, August 22, 2026–January 10, 2027
Book of Miracles, a three-part photographic series by Tanya Marcuse (American, b. 1964), revels in the interplay between photographic process and painting traditions from European Romanticism to Abstract Expressionism. Conceptually sourced in a book published in 1552 known as the Augsburg Book of Miracles, Marcuse’s series is a combination of studio and field photography—ranging from apocalyptic landscapes to fantastical-yet-real scenes the artist has staged in swamps and rivers and miniature, altar-like vignettes. The work is devastating and dark, yet also reverent and timeless—with its rich beauty underscoring the duality between realism and fiction, or documentation and artifice, of the photographic medium.
